Exquisite alabaster bust depicting a young woman slightly crestfallen, in a reflective or prayerful attitude, made around 1900 in France. It is framed in the context of the cultural fashion that prompted groups of painters in the second half of the 19th century to settle in different artistic colonies located in certain enclaves of the Atlantic area and northern Europe; Brittany was one of them. Towns such as Pont-Aven and Concarneau became centers of attraction for different artists interested in the lifestyle of the rural and seafaring lower classes (especially attracted by the female figure), which they took as a source of inspiration for their art.
Alabaster was a very popular material during the 19th century. with it, a soft and translucent finish is achieved, which allows the sculpture to acquire subtle tonal variations, giving the skin a delicate appearance. Both the young woman's hairstyle and clothing are represented in great detail, demonstrating the master's technical mastery. Face with idealized features in which a serene and calm beauty is captured. The headdress that frames the young woman's face is the typical Breton headdress, a raised structure, generally made of white lace or linen with fine embroidery that originated in the region of Brittany and was worn by Breton women as part of their regional costume and is became a symbol of cultural identity. On the other hand, the robust wooden base on which it rests is richly carved with floral motifs and small hummingbirds.
