James Hyde (American, b.1958) is a Contemporary sculptor and painter. Known for his innovative use of color and material, Hyde’s work is often concerned with paintings as physical objects, and explores the boundaries between image and sculpture. He uses a broad range of materials, ranging from Styrofoam to glass, and has also created large-scale installations, such as Air Pillow (2002), a painted vinyl pillow attached to a blower that would keep the pillow inflated.
Born in Philadelphia, Hyde studied at the University of Rochester from 1975–77, and moved to New York City while still in his teens to pursue making art. By the mid-80s, he was showing regularly, and has gone on to exhibit internationally. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at John Good Gallery in New York, Galerie Art In in Nuremberg, the Queens Museum, Mark Mueller Gallery in Zurich, the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC, and Galerie Filles du Calvaire in Paris, among many others.
Hyde is the recipient for numerous honors and awards, including the Pollock-Krasner grant (2012–13), the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship (2000–01), and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2008). His work can be found in the collections of museums such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum of Art in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.
