This is a superb, beautifully designed writing desk with a clock and faux book spines atop a leather writing surface. The desk is attributed to Francois Linke of Paris and has some of the finest gold Dore' bronze ever. Read the attached information below regarding the LC stamping behind the bronze mounts on this desk from Sotheby's own website. The desk is in good antique condition with signs of age and wear but nothing significant and is a rare and chic form of writing desk.
Measures 43 wide x 35.25 tall x 20.5 deep.
The presence of the mark 'CL' on the present lot presents a mystery. This suggests an inventory or numbering system. The only recorded person to do this was François Linke. It has to be assumed that it is purely coincidental that Linke's brother has the initials 'CL'. However, these marks will remain a mystery until possibly chance research discovers who 'CL' was. Clément Linke and later his son, also Clément, worked independently from François, supplying locks and hinges to the wholesale market. Is it possible that they also supplied small mounts cast in their own workshops? less
