They were status symbols, ceremonial instruments, and currency pieces used in rare and significant exchanges. During religious ceremonies, a member of the tribal elite would hold the gongs by the shared handle and beat them with rubber-coated mallets. A simple band of forged metal connects the two bells, adding sweeping height that pulls the eye across its sculptural lines and acoustical curves. See less
