Edition: Unique, Unframed.
This artwork is part of the series "A Painting A Day".The pieces from the series may come as quite a shock to people who have always viewed Langleyswork as being exclusively hard edged.During the course of the year 2015, the artist has been trying to focus on approaching this work with openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions of the final outcome.Heis hoping to find new ways of working and discovering qualities about his work that are currently unknown to him.
Matthew Langley is an abstract American artist. He is interested in a balance of color and process, mark making and field, scale and relationship, planning and improvisation. He lives and works in New York City. The artist studied at Virginia Commonwealth Universityand graduated from the Corcoran School of Art in 1986. Matthew's technique in creating the artworks come from building and extending as well as reducing and minimizing the painted surface. He believes that this is not counter-productive, that often the way forward is to build, rebuild and start again. Often this will employ semi-transparent layers of paint combining the under surface of the artwork to achieve the artist's intent. Langley's artistic background relate to a wide variety of interests. He is well versed in Color Field painting - in particular, work by Morris Louis, Sam Gilliam, and Gene Davis, as well as the abstraction from Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, Callum Innes among others. The artist also has a great interest in the physical paint-handling of artists like Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. Langley'swork is featured in various corporateas well as publiccollections, includingMacAndrews & Forbes and the Doris Patz Collection (University of Maryland University College). The NYC-based artist has widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, mainly on the East Coast. His recent one-man shows include The New Paintings at Blank Space, New York, NY in 2015, and Looking In: New Painting at Axom, Rochester, NY in 2014. His upcoming solo exhibition will be on view at Susan Calloway Fine Arts from September 16 until October 22, 2016. Langley's work has been covered in publications such as Art in America and The Washington Post.
