Born in Chicago, Frank Coburn began his art career as a sign painter and subsequently studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and, later, in St Louis. In 1908, he moved to Los Angeles and became active in the local art scene, undertaking many art trips throughout California where he painted landscapes en plein air. Over the course of a long career, Coburn was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Painters Club (1909), Calif. Federation of Women's Club (1910), Southwest Museum (Los Angeles, 1921, 1922), Laguna Beach Art Association (1921-1933), Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles (1923, 1926), Pasadena Art Institute (1932), and the Bowers Museum (1938). Frank Coburn's work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Bowers Museum (Santa Ana, CA), the Irvine Museum (CA) and the St. Louis Museum, (MO).
