These works aim to highlight the passage of time, where this is made visible. They take inspiration from the story of Sardis.
The city of Sardis is mentioned in ancient classical mythology. Lying on a cliff near the top of Mount Tmolo, it was considered impregnable. Due to the erosion of time, deep cracks formed in the foundations of the city which over the centuries became furrows large enough to allow enemies to gain access without any opposition. Sure of the inviolability of their city, none of the inhabitants seemed to worry about the imminent danger. Eventually the city fell to the invaders.
Many of us can see ourselves in the history of the city of Sardis. We live so frenetically, committed to not disappointing the great expectations placed on us. We are so troubled by life's problems that we too often forget about our spiritual needs. We carry on as if there was no need to worry about the fundamental questions of our existence, regardless of the small cracks that form within our soul. This series challenges the viewer to assume a state of awareness about some aspects of our lives that we may have overlooked, questioning ourselves as individuals and as a society.
Jared Green is a London-based artist who has been living in Italy for some time. Proudly self-taught, after a prominent career as a creative director in the fashion world focused on achieving visual perfection, his art focuses on the exact opposite: exalting imperfection. This highlights an inherent harshness that nevertheless retains a captivating beauty through its composition. His work is highly expressive. Density and simple materials are used lightly. The stratifications appear aggressive only at first. Jared's most recent works take inspiration from Italian Renaissance architecture and the ancient palaces of Milan and Florence where walls peeled by time offer a refined rawness and hidden layers are revealed with great elegance.
