Large intricate early 20th Century sculpture from China depicting 'Lucky Fish and Dragons'. Hand carved from soapstone, waves decorate the plinth with two large fish rising above the sea, with two further freely moving fish from a ring. The frame is formed by the bodies of two dragons that rise above the fish.
A highly decorative piece.
The Chinese word for fish, yu, is pronounced the same as the word for "abundance", "plenty", and "affluence" (yu 餘).
The dragon is a central symbol in Chinese culture and means power, strength and good fortune. The dragon is also believed to control water, rain and floods as well as being a symbol of protection.
This unusual piece showcases the rich cultural heritage of China.
