This magnificent French Empire mantel clock, crafted between 1810 and 1815, embodies the artistic elegance and mythological inspirations of the period. Titled "Cupid’s Lesson," the piece captures a poignant mythological moment of Cupid seeking comfort from Venus after being stung by a bee—a symbolic reminder of the pain his own arrows bring to others.
Features and Design
Mythological Depiction:
The central scene features Cupid and Venus in a finely detailed ormolu sculpture, surrounded by classical symbols of love. A pair of doves on the right symbolizes fidelity, while a beehive with bees on the left represents industriousness and the bittersweet nature of love.
Exceptional Craftsmanship:
The rectangular base is adorned with a stunning frieze of a putto engaged in industrious activities, symbolizing the French ideals of order and prosperity during the Empire period. Supported by finely detailed bird's feet, the base provides an elegant yet sturdy foundation.
Original Mechanism:
The clock retains its original 8-day anchor movement with a rope pendulum. It features a striking mechanism that chimes on the hour and half-hour with a soft, resonant bell tone. An enamel dial, framed in gilded ormolu, ensures timeless functionality and style.
Dimensions:
Height: 44.5 cm (17.5 inches)
Width: 33 cm (13 inches)
Depth: 12.5 cm (5 inches)
Historical Significance
