impressive french mirror in … more Large wall mirror, carved and gilded wood, regency style, napoleon iii period, around 1880 - france
impressive french mirror in the regency or louis xvi style, made during the time of napoleon iii (1852-1880), a time in which some of the styles of the french past were recovered. The french regency refers to the period after the death of louis xiv, between september 1, 1715 and february 15, 1723, during which king louis xv was a minor and france was governed by the regent philip of orleans.
this exuberant mirror features an oval or slightly elliptical shape, surrounded by an exquisitely gilded frame with fine, highly ornate gold. The frame is not uniform in its width; it is expanded and elaborately decorated in several key sections, particularly in the upper part, where a large ornate cape or finial is developed, which presents in its central area a bouquet of flowers, framed by a multitude of seed beads that create a sort of ephemeral architecture. In addition, decorations in the corners and half of each side that enhance its shape and provide decorative continuity; floral elements, vases, birds… rich hand-carved motifs. It is reminiscent of the imposing console or palatial wall mirrors of the 18th century. The gold is an extraordinary water gold burnished with agate stone, showing a rich built-up patina.
with this exquisite mirror you will bring a refined and elegant style to any space and environment. They are mirrors highly sought after in the art market for their refinement and timeless aesthetics. Suitable in any environment, in a composition with more mirrors or as a single piece, with great presence and elegance.
style and era napoleon iii or second empire
the napoleon iii or second empire style gets its name because it was born in france at that time. Strictly speaking, the second empire was proclaimed in 1852 and ended in 1870, led by louis napoleon bonaparte as emperor of the french, although in the artistic sense it extended a few more years (until 1880). This style was very popular among the french bourgeoisie. The emperor himself was involved in the artistic development of the moment, although more closely linked to architecture. However, it is to empress eugenie that the evolution of the decorative arts is owed.
although it is inspired by the styles of the past, starting with classical antiquity, the renaissance, even louis xvi, much loved by eugenia, the most representative characteristic of the style is sumptuousness and ostentation, always aspiring to show wealth and opulence.
it is not a style designed specifically for the second empire, but a recovery of the different great french styles of previous centuries, a kind of compilation of french decorative trends. Special reference is made to louis xiv, louis xv, baroque and rococo, and little by little to louis xvi, with an eclecticist base. In short, the decorative styles that had positioned france at the forefront of interior design and furniture design in europe, both for quality, originality and beauty.
