This mid-century baroque-style handcrafted yellow and opaline Murano chandelier has five undulating arms with petal-trimmed cups. The milky opaline glass veers towards a light blue color with subtle changes in the light. Two tiers of Daffodils embellish this glass chandelier, blooming from the lattice-textured bulbous center column. The piece has further detailing of scroll stems, a central hanging finial, and rigaree trim; exhibiting a masterful flair in glass craftsmanship. This mid-century chandelier is a pared-down interpretation of the ‘Ca'Rezzonico’ style of chandeliers created by Giuseppe Briati in the 18th century. The ‘Ca'Rezzonico’ style is named for the Venetian palace, today a public museum dedicated to 18th century Venice, where Briati’s initial masterpiece resides.
The glass houses on the island of Murano are famous for highly ornamented glass chandeliers created by the inflation of molten glass followed by cutting, pincering, and other rapidly executed decorations and details. The body and arms of this piece are made of opaline Venetian glass. Opaline glass is typically made bluish-white by the addition of Calcium phosphate (bone ash) and opalescent by the addition of fluorides. The lemon yellow details are made using a combination of pigment and ‘Lattimo’ glass. Lattimo, Italian for “milky,” refers to the layers of slightly opaque white glass. The opacity and color are provided by the presence of microcrystals dispersed in the glass matrix that are separated when the molten glass is cooled down. The opaque yellow details are concentrated on the trims and florals, which complement the shifting opalescent hues.
A splendid combination of opaline glass and pale yellow, reminiscent of dewy springtime hues. This chandelier demonstrates a delicate Baroque-style design still loved by many, resulting in a glistening floral centerpiece. An example of refinement and ephemeral beauty, this chandelier is truly captivating and elevates any interior with a touch of the natural world.
