Serapi rug is one of the most recognized types of antique rugs available today. Originating from the Turkmenistan region, these rugs are also famous as serapes and have a history that goes back thousands of years. Serapi rugs are traditionally made by hand using a technique called looping: small pieces of silk are intricately weaved together using a delicate, asymmetrical pattern. The result is a cotton-like effect with the intricate color variation that can be very beautiful. Weavers use six main colors: red, brown blue, red, gold, and yellow-green.
