Extraordinary souvenir of the Grand Tour in the form of a classic ruin with patinated bronze columns, and base and frieze of Siena marble, made around 1920 in Italy. It represents the temple of Vespasian and Titus located in the Roman Forum in the city of Rome. Dedicated to Emperor Vespasian, deified, and his son, Emperor Titus. It was started by Titus in 79 AD, after the death of Vespasian and the succession of Titus. Titus's brother Domitian completed and dedicated the temple to Titus and Vespasian in approximately 87 AD.
This sculpture combines materials of the noblest quality, such as Siena marble and bronze; thus exemplifying the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic mastery of the Grand Tour era, as well as the enduring fascination with classical antiquity during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Grand Tour was a tradition that dated back to the 18th century, where the most cultured students traveled to different European cities to acquire knowledge and culture. Medals, coins and stamps would be ostentatiously displayed in the cabinets and libraries of those travelers.
It is a model that reflects a small part of the temple. The pedestal supports three dark-colored columns that support a rectangular upper frieze. On the frieze you can read the engraved inscription that says “STIVTE” accompanied by a small detail in relief, a decorative symbol in the shape of a flower. The structure also features details on the top and bottom edges, with patterns reminiscent of the Corinthian architectural style.
Siena marble is a type of yellow marble that was highly appreciated in ancient times, especially in Roman times. This marble is known for its characteristic golden yellow color with veins that can range in shades from beige to brown, giving it a warm and distinctive appearance. It was widely used in constructions and decorative sculptures in temples, palaces, and other important buildings in the Roman Empire.
