Cirano Castelfranchi View of the Naviglio of Via San Damiano 1952 oil painting on poplar plywood portrays a view of old Milan, a Milanese landscape painted with confident and full-bodied brushwork. The painting is in good condition within a modern ivory lacquered frame with gilded corner profiles. The romantic Ponte delle Sirenette, today visible in the heart of Sempione park in Milan, is portrayed in the foreground; built to a design by the architect Francesco Tettamanzi between 1840 and 1842 by the Rubini-Scalini-Falck e C di Dongo company; the decorations were created on plaster models by Benedetto Cacciatori; the bridge was commissioned by private individuals to be placed on the canal in Via San Damiano, today Via Uberto Visconti di Modrone.
On the parapets there were two Latin inscriptions commemorating the construction of the first iron bridge in Milan in 1841 during the rule of Ferdinand I of Austria. On each of the pylons at the ends a mermaid was placed with an oar in her hand. Originally the pillars were decorated with cast iron friezes, anchors and swans holding festoons in the upper part, lion heads in the lower part.
Born in Genoa on 2 July 1912, Cirano Castelfranchi has always lived in Milan. He paints in oil and watercolor as a self-taught. He attended the drawing school in Brera. Since 1934 he has exhibited in regional and national exhibitions; and in 1942 he was awarded at the exhibition of Italian painters in arms in Palermo. He has works in private collections in Italy and abroad: New York, Paris, London. In 1934 he drew a series of plates with views of Milan. This piece has an attribution mark,
