A RARE and very well executed miniature silhouette of a gentleman in its original period frame
White highlights at the hair and shadows on the bust
Painted by Rufus K. Cummings, American, active in Boston 1830 - 1843,
Little is known about this 19th century silhouettist, except that he worked in Boston in the 1840's. He is one of the few American silhouettes who made cut and paste with guilt embellishments during the 19th century. Cummings cut out silhouettes of blackened paper and beautifully, but subtly embellished them with gold or white, as the one presented here. His work is scarce to find. A pair is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Acc # 60.603.14a & 60.603.14b.)
