An outstanding wall charger.
Highest quality Andalusian ceramic made by the master artisans from Viuda de Gomez (Widow of Gomez) factory in Sevilla
Exquisitely hand painted scene featuring an intricate and rare subject - shoemakers workshop and store, catching the visit of two potential clients, apparently high society ladies (senorita and senora)
The painting is signed lower center right by the artist - "Romero"
In the 1870 the clay industrialist Antonio Gomez started producing pottery in the Triana neighborhood of Sevilla. After his death around 1881 the business passed to his widow, becoming known as the "Widow of Gomez" (Viuda da Gomez) until 1906 when it passed to heir and consequently changed the name
The presented here charger is marked "Vda de Gomez / Sevilla" in blue/mulberry underglaze cursive
A very rare and unique artifact
Circa 1881-1906, the city of Seville in Andalucía, Spain
Measurements: Approx. 19" diameter (across) x 2.25" high/deep
Weighs about 6 lbs. 12 oz.
Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. No major issues or restoration. Some minor and unobtrusive surface flakes to the glaze around the edge that could be even from the time of manufacturing, one of which a bit larger, were painted over as pictured. All original.
