He trained under the ukiyo-e master … more Tsuchiya Koitsu 土屋光逸 (1870-1949) was a Japanese print artist of the Shin Hanga movement. He trained under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, and in the 1930’s began designing woodblock prints for the Shozaburo Watanabe publishing house. A contemporary of Hiroshi Yoshida and Kawase Hasui, Koitsu is known for his landscapes and images of traditional Japanese architecture. Koitsu's works can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago and Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

This design of a boat sailing on a moonlit night is a wonderful example of Koitsu's mastery of water and light. Among Koitsu’s oeuvre of landscapes, his images of rain and night scenes are especially popular and well-collected. According to The Catalogue Raisonne of Tsuchiya Koitsu, all of Baba Nobuhiko's blocks were destroyed during WWII, making this work especially rare.
