Born in 1902, Tomikichiro Tokuriki (徳力富吉郎) was a prolific woodblock print artist of the Shin Hanga (New Prints) and Sosaku … more Born in 1902, Tomikichiro Tokuriki (徳力富吉郎) was a prolific woodblock print artist of the Shin Hanga (New Prints) and Sosaku Hanga (Creative Prints) movements. A graduate of Kyoto City School of Fine Arts, Tokuriki's landscapes of Kyoto were popular amongst western travelers who visited Japan in the 1950's and 1960's. After the war, Tokuriki established Matsukyu, his own publishing house and printing studio to produce and distribute Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga works. Tokuriki's designs can be found in the Museum of Modern Art New York and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Tokuriki breaks away from his typical idyllic landscapes in this popular design. A noodle cart lit by a paper lantern grounds the abstract composition as the silhouetted peddler takes a break under a willow tree. This impression is in excellent condition with great color. It is signed and dated with publisher's marks in the right margin.
