This rare and elegant piece is a testament to Joe Colombo's visionary design and mastery of form. Crafted from Alexandrite glass, renowned for its ability to change color depending on the light source, the "Biglia" subtly shifts between shades of blue and violet, evoking a sense of mystery and intrigue with every glance. The thick, semi-spherical glass orb, which rests atop a finely silver-plated circular compartment, is not only a striking aesthetic feature but also serves a dual function. The orb can be used as an ashtray, while the silver-plated section below doubles as a refined box for storing jewelry, small treasures, or keepsakes. The hallmark on the silver plating further attests to its authenticity and quality. The craftsmanship is impeccable: the glasswork of the orb is beautifully smooth, with a subtle curvature that plays with light, creating an ethereal glow when placed in different settings. The silver-plated base, with its sleek, modern lines, offers a functional contrast to the organic form of the glass above. Over time, a delicate patina has developed on the silver, enhancing the piece's vintage allure, while a barely noticeable, small dent (as shown in the photos) adds to its history and uniqueness. This ashtray/box is not only a functional object but also a piece of art—its timeless design making it a coveted collector's item for admirers of mid-century modern design. Both the orb and the base feature matching Alexandrite glass, reinforcing the harmony of materials and the sculptural quality of the piece. Whether displayed as a centerpiece in a living room or used as a luxurious accent on a desk or dressing table, this piece exudes sophistication and serves as a conversation starter.
