Design
After working for several Italian design firms in the 1950s, Sabattini founded his own studio in 1956. He quickly gained international fame with his silverware designs for Christofle, characterized by elegant, organic shapes.
In the 1960s, Sabattini began collaborating with ceramicists, creating unique and innovative ceramic pieces for companies such as Rosenthal and Raymor. He also designed furniture and lamps.
Sabattini won numerous awards throughout his career, including the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1956, 1959 and 1962. His works are exhibited in museums around the world, including the MoMA in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Sabattini was interested in fusing Neo-Classicism with Modernist and Minimalist aesthetics. Born on September 23, 1925 in Corregio, Italy, he studied metalsmithing while working in a brass shop as a teenager, and later learned pottery from a German expatriate craftsman named Rolando Hettner. Sabattini went on to work in Paris and Milan for the Christofle company, eventually forming his own company, Argenteria Sabattini, in 1964. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. Sabattini lives and works in Bregnano, Italy.
