Hugo Mühlig was the son of the Dresden landscape and genre painter Meno Mühlig (1823–1873) and a nephew of the landscape and animal painter Bernhard Mühlig (1829–1910). He first learned painting from his father, then at the Dresden Art Academy, most recently from 1877 to 1880 as a master student of Viktor Paul Mohn (1842–1911). While he remained true to the realism of Ludwig Richter's school for a long time in his drawings, he broke new ground in painting soon after moving to Düsseldorf in 1881. Although his paintings (mostly of small or medium format) are characterized by great attention to detail and perfect reproduction of material values from the usual viewing distance, a close view shows that these effects are achieved with great virtuosity through the use of impressionistic painting techniques.
The impressionistic character of his paintings also comes from the fact that the landscapes and scenes of farmers harvesting, hunters in winter fields or people walking at the fair are almost always bathed in bright sunlight, which allows the colors of the objects to shine through in a particularly pure and unadulterated way. In terms of composition, his paintings are characterized by the fact that, from a slightly elevated position, the objects and figures in the foreground and near middle ground are particularly accentuated and are usually grouped by one or two diagonals from the viewing point to the left and/or right edge of the horizon become.
The distance often only takes up a small strip in the middle of the picture, the upper half (or at least the upper third) is filled by the almost always clear blue sky, against which some trees or houses can often be clearly seen. This clear compositional scheme, which corresponds to a somewhat theatrical arrangement of people and animals, suggests that his paintings were usually created in the studio, albeit based on a large number of fresh sketches made in nature, which he mostly used as gouaches or Executed watercolors. To gain these impressions, he traveled regularly to Willingshausen in der Schwalm from 1883 to 1891 and became a member of the Willingshausen Painter's Colony artists' association.
In Düsseldorf he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association from 1887 until his death in 1929 and from 1891 in the secessionist Free Association of Düsseldorf Artists. At the beginning of 1900, he lived in the house of the commercial councilor Franz Schoenfeld at Adlerstrasse 41a, in the meantime he received a professor's title, moved to Duisburger Strasse 15 around 1909 and was given a studio in the artist's studio house of the Düsseldorf Artists' Association on Sittarder Strasse, which had just been completed at the time 5 This piece has an attribution mark,
