Painter born in 1880, he is above all a politically committed xylographer. Active in Geneva. These fields of activity are painting, xylography, illustration, engraving \. He died in 1947 in Geneva, is a Swiss painter, xylographer and illustrator. He collaborated with the libertarian press and in particular with Réveil anarchiste, whose header he redesigned in 1930. Influenced in his early days by Ferdinand Hodler, his painting evolved towards a more direct realism, especially after 1918, when he collaborated with the Geneva anarchist circles around Luigi Bertoni. He offered 49 woodcuts to the newspaper Le Réveil anarchiste between 1918 and 1930, the year he redesigned the model of the publication. In 1983, a film was dedicated to him by the French-speaking Swiss television, Le Drapeau noir by Alexandre Mairet.
This captivating work features an oil portrait of a woman, embodying a classic and timeless style. The subtly textured background is distinguished by deep shades of brown and green, adding a cozy and intimate atmosphere to the composition. The woman's face, turned to the left, evokes serenity and remarkable inner depth. The color palette is sober and harmonious, highlighting the delicate skin tones and the black of the hair, thus accentuating the contrast with the background. The facial features are painted with a precision and finesse that reveal the technical skill of the artist: the soft contour of the cheeks, the pensive look and the slightly pink mouth underline the introspective personality of the subject. The lighting is strategically used to create a play of light and shadow which gives realistic depth to the portrait. The background elements appear to evoke discreet wallpaper designs, adding a historical or cultural dimension to the work without distracting the viewer from the main subject. Every detail, from the sitter's serene expression to the subtly worked texture of the background, demonstrates exceptional artistic mastery, making this portrait not only a reflection of individuality but also an exploration of the human soul.
