Francisque noailly, born in marseille in march 1855, died in algiers in 1942, is a french orientalist painter and copper engraver.
after studying at the marseille school of fine arts, he was a student of william bouguereau and tony robert-fleury at the paris school of fine arts. From 1875, he carried out his military service in algeria in the zouaves regiment. He married in algiers and set up his workshop in the redoute district.
director of the school of industrial arts in algiers mustapha, which had 500 students in 1905, professor at the society of fine arts, noailly excelled in painting algerian scenes.
he is also an engraver on copper and tin. Vice-president with alfred chataud of the society of algerian orientalist artists, he is also a member of the artistic union of north africa (uaan) which gave him his first grand prize in 1935. According to élisabeth cazenave, in all his works “noailly demonstrates rare sureness of hand and impeccable drawing”
this striking work presents a female profile imbued with dignity and depth. The composition is dominated by a harmonious play of bright colors and rich textures. The woman is shown in profile, a classic pose which highlights the delicacy of her face and the intensity of her expression. The artist chose a warm color palette, with shades of red, orange and brown which give the work an enveloping warmth. A colorful scarf covers his head, accentuating the cultural character of the scene. The red of the shawl, draped elegantly around her shoulders, contrasts beautifully with a neutral background, making the figure stand out powerfully. The details of the face are rendered with great delicacy. The woman's subtle features, as well as her golden earrings, add a dimension of refinement. The treatment of light highlights the contours of the face, creating an almost palpable depth and presence. This painting stands out for its ability to evoke an intimate story and capture a moment of silent contemplation. The gaze into the distance suggests introspection or silent reverie, inviting the viewer to wonder about the thoughts of this mysterious woman. A perfect example of the author's technical and artistic mastery, the work succeeds in combining tradition and emotion with remarkable visual effectiveness. It demonstrates a keen sensitivity to timeless beauty and understated elegance. Original frame
