bacchus or the drunks, 2024.
bacchus is inspired by diego velázquez's masterpiece, the triumph of bacchus, but seeks to bring a contemporary and personal vision to this classic scene.
miquel ángel: ''like velázquez, i wanted to explore the duality between the divine and the mundane. Bacchus remains the god who brings relief and joy to ordinary men. Wine is often one of the few joys that the poor have.
i have opted for an expressionist style, but with a focus on the use of colour and light to create a more vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. The scene is given dynamism by the movements of the characters: in this work, each character has an expression and posture that reflects a different emotion, from joy and euphoria to introspection and melancholy. This seeks to capture the complexity of human emotions and how wine and celebration can be both a source of relief and reflection.
my interpretation of "the triumph of bacchus" also seeks to reflect on escapism in contemporary society through vices. In times of stress and difficulty, many people seek relief in celebration and enjoyment."
biography miquel ángel:
''i was born (1974) in lomas de zamora, a city near buenos aires, which belongs to a working class urban conglomerate called 'greater buenos aires'.
i am the son of an italian father, who came to this country being a little child, fleeing from the war, like many others in that times. I'm argentinian and italian citizen, and have family in both countries.
i live in buenos aires. I obtained a bachelor of visual arts from the national university of arts.
i have developed my work in the academic field for many years, so i conceive painting as a form of research.
i’m a member of the argentine society of plastic artists and i have participated in several salons of that institution.
i have my studio in buenos aires city, where i work investigating new forms of expression on the great pictorial genres of the western tradition.'' this piece has an attribution mark,
