Bruno Krauskopf was born in 1892 in Marienburg, West Prussia. At the age of 14, he went to Berlin to begin an apprenticeship as a chromo-lithographer. with the help of a scholarship, he studied from 1910 at the Royal Museum of Decorative Arts under Professor Doeppler. The graphic oeuvre, which primarily contains lithographs and is supplemented by wood and linocuts, was created between 1913 and 1921. from 1916 Krauskopf was a member of the "Free Berlin Secession", then Lovis Corinth was able to convince him to join the "Berlin Secession", where he served as a board and jury member until 1933 and took part in all exhibitions. Krauskopf took part in the founding meeting of the "November Group" and, together with Max Pechstein, Rudolf Belling and Erich Mendelsohn, was a member of its working committee in 1918. Already at the beginning of the 1920s, a change took place in Krauskopf's painting style: the color palette became fresher and brighter, and the pasty application of paint signaled an ever-increasing turn to the impressionistic style. This was followed by solo exhibitions in the Berlin galleries Flechtheim, Gurlitt and Victor Hartberg. Numerous awards confirm Krauskopf's increasing success. Study trips to Poland and France between 1927 and 1932 gave the artist new inspiration, but his successful work came to an abrupt end when the National Socialists came to power. When he doesn't want to follow the official line in the desired way, his art is branded as "degenerate". Under massive pressure, Krauskopf emigrated to Norway in 1933 and settled there in Stavanger. He is surrounded by a landscape that suits his nature in terms of light, color and tectonics. But he cannot lead this quiet life focused on art for long, because with the occupation of Norway he has to leave this country too. Krauskopf goes to America, where, after a difficult start, he receives increasing recognition. Two New York galleries made him known and in 1952 he was celebrated as a representative of current American art at the "Carnegie International Exhibition" in Pittsburgh. In 1957, Krauskopf moved to Berlin and died there three years later, on December 23, 1960, after a serious illness. Throughout his life, Bruno Krauskopf saw himself as a painter “who can only paint and nothing else.” This dedication and passion can be felt in his art.
