As a lyrical abstraction painter, Stacey Warnix's paintings emphasize experiential, nuanced color over composition. Contrasting moments of positive versus negative space, layered translucence, light reflectivity, and luminosity are recurring elements in her organic color-forward displays. Finding respite in abstracted forms, textures, and tones, Stacey pulls from a distorted memory bank of places observed during extensive travels. She allows happenstance and intuitive gestural marks to shape compositions that evoke impressions of deconstructed landscapes or loosely splayed flowers.
All her paintings begin with a color intention. Grounded on raw textiles with their nubby, imperfect, and unpredictable texture, initial marks immediately stain the surface, and she embraces the uncertainty, connecting the elements as she works her way forward. Despite the soft-handed, almost suede-like, appearance of her finished paintings, her application methods are often frenetic and rough, including intentional distressing and subtractive methods to reveal contrasting underlayers.
