Well known for his satirical and political engravings, Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827) was a gifted artist of both the human form and condition in all its grand variety. He honed his skills at the Royal Academy in London for several years from 1772 and also in Paris and further abroad. In this series, soldiers of various regiments are depicted in his typically lively manner, in which the horses show as much personality as the riders. Subjects include: Loyal Islington Volunteer Cavalry, Lambeth Cavalry, Clerkenwell Cavalry, Surrey Yeomanry, Light Horse Volunteer, and Deptford Cavalry. Dated between 1798 and 1799, hand coloring with gold and silver details on the uniforms, in wonderful later matching vintage gilded frames, all with speckling, wear and signs of age, overall attractive antique patina.
