These works celebrate organic form and exemplify the philosophy of designer Louis Comfort Tiffany: “Nature is always right. Nature is always beautiful.” Introduced in 1893 after years of experimentation, Favrile glass was inspired by Tiffany’s interest in ancient glass made iridescent by its absorption of minerals in the soil in which it had been buried. Tiffany’s craftsmen finally achieved this lustrous sheen by mixing metallic oxides with molten glass. He described Favrile glass as “distinguished by brilliant or deeply toned colors, usually iridescent like the wings of certain American butterflies, the necks of pigeons and peacocks, the wing covers of various beetles.” less
