Stunning red lacquer (negoro) Japanese tansu chest from 1860 Meiji period. One long drawer across the top with smaller drawers down the left side. Two even sized drawers on the bottom, panels on the right side lock with a handwrought iron slide lock mechanism. Panels open up to reveal a single shelfed area lined with a mint green felt-like paper material. Latches, handles and drawer pulls are original to the chest and contrast the red lacquer wonderfully.
There is natural wear and tear on edges and the feet, nothing that doesn't come with owning a piece of furniture over 100 years old from the other side of the world. In great, sturdy condition for it's age.
