Modern woodblock by Charles Smith (1893-1987). Born in Virginia, Charles Smith specialized in relief printing, publishing illustrated books "Old Viriginia in Block Prints" (1929), "University of Virginia, Thirty Two Woodcuts" (1937), and "Old Charleston" (1933) one of the defining texts of publishing during the Charleston Renaissance, as well as several books on relief printing technique.
In 1939, he published "Abstractions by Charles Smith" a limited edition book that included 6 original woodcuts.
