Fantastic set of 8 Medea dining chairs, designed by Vittorio Nobili and produced by Fratelli Tagliabue in Italy during the 1950s. These chairs perfectly represent the organic modernist style, featuring sculpted teak wood seats supported by black enameled steel legs and highlighted with brass hardware. The natural beauty of the wood grain is accentuated by their elegantly curved plywood forms, making them an iconic piece of mid-century design and highly collectible.
The chairs are in their original, authentic condition with some scratches consistent with age and use.
Vittorio Nobili (1917 - 2000) was born in Milan and studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic before transitioning to furniture design in the 1940s. He began his career at the Milanese furniture company Fratelli Tagliabue, where his innovative designs garnered prestigious awards. In 1953, Nobili established his own furniture design company, Arredamenti Vittorio Nobili, which quickly earned a reputation for avant-garde creations. He was renowned for his bold use of materials such as stainless steel, glass and Plexiglas, as well as for his minimalist and functional design approach. Nobili collaborated with many of Italy's leading brands, including Olivetti, Bieffeplast and Arflex.
He designed iconic pieces such as the Superleggera chair and the Leggera plastic chair. His expertise extended to designing interiors for ships and aircraft, as well as exhibitions for events like the Milan Triennale. Throughout his career, Nobili received numerous awards for his contributions to design, including the Compasso d'Oro prize in 1955 and 1957. His works are exhibited in museums worldwide, including MoMA in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. This piece has an attribution mark,
