Two four-armed candleholders made of hammered and chased silver, base in a round basic shape, domed and ribbed and segmented in twelve rays, pointedly raised in the middle, with four slender u-shaped tubes on top, joined in the middle by a ball divided into twelve columns by pleating, set with trumpet-shaped spouts with eight petal edges at the outer ends. The design of a six-branched candlestick by josef hoffmann for the wiener werkstätte, around 1928, can certainly be seen as a model for this viennese silversmith's work. Compare: mak vienna, online collection, inventory number go 1796. Hammered decoration or martelé: hand-working the surface of metals, such as silver or copper, with small hammer blows to create a textured, irregular surface became a popular and characteristic decorative technique of the wiener werkstätte at the beginning of the 20th century. The hammered decoration creates a rustic, handcrafted look that is simultaneously elegant and modern, symbolizing the appreciation for quality craftsmanship and the individual touch that can be achieved through handwork. Well-known artists of the wiener werkstätte, such as josef hoffmann, who was also its co-founder, and dagobert peche, liked to use this technique in their work, achieving a fusion of artistic expression and craftsmanship in keeping with the philosophy of the wiener werkstätte: the endeavor to combine art and everyday life, and to provide everyday objects with aesthetic and technical refinement. Examples: silver tea and coffee services, jewelry such as brooches and bracelets, as well as decorative objects for the home.
