We are delighted to be able to offer you this wonderful triple asymmetric Art Deco Wardrobe veneered in birdseye maple and dating to the 1930’s and with a Royal connection. This fine example is in lovely original Country House condition. We have decided to not restore this in terms of refinishing etc as we want to keep this particular piece completely original. We purchased the wardrobe earlier this year from a company who cleared this from a house in London nearly 10 years ago and have had it in store ever since. After purchase, during collection they enlightened us that this had been owned by The Late Countess Spencer, Lady Diana’s mother and the grandmother of Prince William and Harry, future heirs to the English throne. They also pointed out the storage label, marked Spencer afixed to the back. Inside we later discovered among numerous Harrods shopping bags one of which was marked “For Her Ladyship”, a receipt from Harrods to the Count Spencer. These will all be included with the wardrobe. Although we have no further proof we are confident in this information given it was offered post our purchase and is born out with the afore mentioned items.
The wardrobe comprises of the main 2 door section of full hanging together with its original brass hanging rail, whilst the 3rd door opens to reveal 2 deep drawers to the base, 2 glazed fronted drawers above with open shelves between offering a variation on storage solutions. Both locks work and come with the original key which must have been used by the Countess or Her Lady’s Maid.
The overall condition is of a beautiful satin finish accented with straight grained darker walnut banding to the edges, again followed through on the plinth in which it sits. As mentioned before the wardrobe is in its original Country House condition meaning it is in excellent used condition, obviously well cared for but will have some minor marks commensurate with normal useage and its age.
Overall it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to not only own a wardrobe with Royal provenance but as a fabulous example of an Art Deco Asymetric Wardrobe in stunning Birds Eye Maple.
