Gocken Jobs – Icon of Swedish Textile Art
Gocken Jobs (born Hanna Ingrid Elisabet Jobs, September 7, 1914 – December 26, 1995) was a Swedish ceramicist and textile artist who had a significant impact on 20th-century Scandinavian art. Her work was often inspired by nature, particularly flowers and organic patterns, bringing life and color into the world of textile art. She worked closely with her sister, Lisbet Jobs, creating unique motifs that remain recognizable and popular to this day.
Between 1931 and 1935, Gocken studied at the Högre Konstindustriella skolan in Stockholm (now Konstfack) and worked with her sister in their shared ceramics studio. During World War II, limited access to glazes led the sisters to transfer their floral motifs onto textiles, marking a new artistic direction in their careers. Their textile designs were first showcased at the 1945 exhibition "När skönheten kom till byn" at the Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Stockholm, a breakthrough moment for their art.
Gocken Jobs designed around 45 textile patterns, produced at the family printing studio, Jobs Handtryck, founded by their brother Peer Jobs in 1944. These pieces hold a special place in Scandinavian interiors, evoking both tradition and modern aesthetics, and are an important part of Swedish design history. less
