The Uruli box transcends traditional functionality, transforming the classic Indian vessel into a work of art inspired by the moon's ethereal grace. Meticulously handcrafted, the uruli’s base showcases hemispherical walls that flow seamlessly into an expansive center, echoing the moon's timeless allure and its profound cultural significance in Indian heritage.
Adorning this exquisite base is a sleek, concave copper dish that serves as a lid elevating the uruli’s versatility. When the lid glides open along the uruli’s curvature, it elegantly mirrors the moon's phases, adding a poetic touch to the design. This sophisticated interplay of form and function creates a luxurious container for treasured heirlooms or personal artifacts, embodying both utility and opulence.
The copper sheet that forms these exceptional pieces are handpicked and store for months on end allowing the grains of copper to anneal and harden. The trained artisan's eye then chooses the right sheet to begin the work of bending and forming the uruli and the concave dish. The elemental dance of this metal with fire and water, heating and quenching, can at times undergo 5-6 repetitions which can take months on end to produce. Eventually this pieced honed by the expert eye and feel of the artisans hand to take its final shape and finished in its distinct style.
This uruli bowl comes in the traditional Mathaarkaam or Hand Beaten Indentations. The rythmic repetitions of hand beaten patterns is one of the earliest forms of ornamentation in the craft. The subtle indentations capture the warm light and cradle it, giving it a soothing effect.
Each copper concave dish, which acts like as a lid for the box, is hand spun, and has the indelible "artisans' signature", a remanent of their work and knowledge, making no two pieces the same. less
