1958 7.5 ft RARE Modern Coatings Aluminum Christmas Tree
$2200.00
Modern Coatings, Inc.
Aluminum Christmas trees were first commercially manufactured sometime around 1955, remained popular into the 1960s, and were manufactured into the 1970s. The trees were first manufactured by Modern Coatings, Inc. of Chicago.
Here we offer a Rare 7.5 Foot Mid-Century Modern Coatings aluminum Christmas tree with original box and sleeves. Modern Coating Company (MCC) invented the aluminum Christmas tree in 1957. In 1958, this Chicago company mass-produced the first aluminum Christmas trees. Although the company essentially invented aluminum trees, they were the smallest of the major aluminum tree manufacturers. Of all three aluminum tree makers, Modern Coatings, Inc. trees are typically the hardest to find, as the company only made them for a few years and they had limited distribution. The Chicago-based company produced the high-end aluminum tree, ‘The Angel Pine” with a central wooden pole and sturdy design, marketing the modern holiday aesthetic to the luxury market. Each tree retailed for between $80-$100 in 1957-1959, equivalent to around $1000 in 2019. By 1959, companies like aluminum specialty and Evergleam, among many others, licensed the idea and began to popularize and churn out a cheaper, light weight tree for a mass audience. By the early 1960s, Aluminum Specialty came up with the idea of ‘Pom-pom’ ends to each branch, rotating tree stands and rotating color wheel lamp light among many other kitsch-tastic accessories. Original MCC trees are difficult to find today and even more so with their original box. This listing is for a once-in-a-lifetime piece of Americana, an original MCC Angel Pine 7.5’ aluminum tree.
