The black-and-white photograph captures a street scene in the Santa Lucia neighborhood of Naples, Italy, taken in 1954 by Erich Andres. A group of street musicians is performing, with one man playing a trumpet and another strumming a banjo. A large drum is set up on the ground, contributing to the casual yet lively setup. Several bystanders, including two young girls in dark clothing with white collars, stand nearby, watching the performance. The scene feels animated and spontaneous, offering a glimpse into the vibrant street culture of 1950s Naples. The rough texture of the building’s facade and the informal attire of the musicians and spectators add to the authentic atmosphere of the image. Erich Andres was born in Germany in 1905 and passed away in 1992. He began his career as a photographer in 1920 and was one of the first to use a Leica camera. Today, his work is exhibited in several museums, including the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. In 1951, Andres contributed to Edward Steichen's iconic exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
