“Fairly extensive marshes occur along the shores of Klamath Lake, and Klamath marsh covers about a hundred square miles. These areas are the resort of innumerable waterfowl, which were of great importance to the aboriginal Klamath, and thousands of acres were a mass of water-lilies, which yielded in abundance an edible seed.” – Edward Curtis
EDWARD SHERIFF CURTIS (American, 1868-1952)
Plate 456: “Klamath Lake Marshes” [South central Oregon]
From The North American Indian
Sepia printed photogravure engraving on Japanese tissue
Photogravure by Suffolk Engr. Co., Cambridge Mass., 1923
Sight size: 12 3/8 x 15 ½ in.; Frame size: 21 5/8 x 24 ¾ in.
A tranquil composition of Native American gliding in a canoe on Klamath Lake in south-central Oregon. The reflection of boat and rider in the near mirror surface of the lake conjures the dreamlike majesty of a singular moment in time.
The ethnologist and photographer Edward S. Curtis is best known for his beautiful compositions of America’s native people and western landscape. His humble beginnings on a farm near Whitewater, Wisconsin provided a deep respect for those who had endured hardship. Thus his poignant portraits and romantic landscapes provide a rich document of America’s native population and its land on the cusp of mass development fueled by manifest destiny.
Curtis’ photography career began in Minnesota at the tender age of 17 and eventually brought him to the Pacific Northwest. There, at the age of 27, he won the coveted gold medal at the National Photographic Society for his portrait of Princess Angeline, the daughter of Chief Sealth of Seattle. This early recognition gained the attention of ethnologist George Bird Grinnell who invited Curtis to join him on the Harriman Alaska Expedition in 1899. The success of his images and enjoyment in the project lit a fire in Curtis who endeavored to document all of America’s native tribes.
In 1906 J.P. Morgan funded Curtis’ project with a $75,000 endowment. Curtis’ intention was not only to document the tribes visually by to also give a thorough description of each and express concern for their future. The project was time sensitive issue for the man who wrote, “The information that is to be gathered ... respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost."
Since the Morgan funds were earmarked to support only fieldwork for the books not for writing, editing, or production of the volumes, Curtis eventually ran out of funds. The 500 sets planned were never completed. An estimated 272 sets were finished, many of which have been broken up, while an estimated 85 remain in institutional collections. Three issues were produced: one printed on Van Gelder paper; another on Japan vellum, and another on Japanese tissue. 40 sets were issued on tissue, and the remaining sets were split relatively evenly between vellum and Van Gelder, with many sets exhibiting a mixture of two or more types.
