The plate was made for the marriage of Alle Bt Tichelaar and Aaltje van Delden who were united in marriage on 24 January 1762. The inscription is framed in a square cartouche surrounded by flower vases and floral elements resembling pistils of flowers with stamens, which may have been an allusion to a fruitful and child-rich marriage. The reverse of the rim features an alternating decoration of dots and circles and zigzag motifs.

Dimensions: diameter 23 cm / 9.05 in. Condition: Rim chips typical for Dutch Delftware.

Marriage was, and is, a special and festive event in life and with it comes the giving of gifts. Objects of Delftware made to commemorate the wedding ceremony were an appropriate gift at that time. The Delft potteries probably had several standard designs for wedding plates in their repertoire from which future bridal couples could choose. Several wedding plates are known from the marriage of Alle Tichelaar and Aaltje van Delden (Van Geenen, p. 126). Perhaps a set of six, eight or 12 plates were made for the newlyweds or as a gift to relatives and others present at the wedding ceremony. Seven years later, another wedding couple, Abraham Izak Hulshoff and Martje Beerents, chose the same decor at the same pottery (Scholten & Jörg, p. 26, no. 41). less
