The crown or serrated … more This large, antique stoneware pot was made as a storage vessel in Germany in the 1870s.

The crown or serrated base is typical for the Langerweher insert and storage pots, known locally as “Baaren”.

The baaren were primarily used to store sauerkraut and the crown base served as a kind of “crumple zone” that caused the spikes to break off if the heavy, filled containers were transported if they fell onto the surface, but protected the sensitive floor and prevented the stored ones from leaking Food prevented.

The storage vessel has a dark brown, semi-matt glaze with a surrounding light band in the middle of the wall and two horizontal handles.

Stoneware inserts and storage pots were manufactured in Langerwehe near Düren from the 16th century until around the 1920s.

Today these storage containers can be used wonderfully for decoration in the home and garden.
