Original 19th C. English Hand Colored Lithograph in original gilt frame - a caricature by well-known illustrator John Leech.
"The Fair Foxophilites"
Archery, Bows and Arrows with a glorious estate in the background - fully costumed with whimsical dispositions all around.
Print on paper is bright and richly detailed, and the rings of the target and lush landscape and detailing is bright and crisp. London printers mark in lower right, and Leech's print signature in lower left.
34" wide by 26.5" tall by 1" deep.
The frame is original and was once exceptional - and now is distinguished by its patina and honest aging. It is structurally sound but shows losses, chips and fading - making it a perfect period piece!
Original glass still present - adds to the perfect period piece.
The artist John Leech (1817-1864) is an interesting story as well...Leech was originally a medical student. His teachers saw his superb anatomical drawings and advised him to become an illustrator. Leech is best known for his contribution to Punch Magazine which published over 3000 of his drawings and 600 cartoons. He also made many witty prints to illustrate sporting stories in caricature - humorously exaggerating striking characteristics of people.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
We have many friends in the world of independent schools and colleges, and this print is believed to have come from the collections from a very fine women's college in Virginia. It is one of several we expect to offer on Chairish featuring a variety of humorous themes - each with patina-rich original frames which only add to the story of the piece. less
