A Charming Regency Period Circular Giltwood And Gesso Convex Mirror Of Good Bold Proportions, Having Superbly Carved Eagle Surmounted To Frame, with Original Gilded Surface And Applied Ball Border, Enclosing Original Convex Mirror Plate And Attractive Foliate Carved Decoration Below.
A charming and very attractive example of the sterotypical regency period convex mirror. It is full of class and elegance and would be a real feature in any room of any property.
It is slightly larger than standard in terms of its size, but not overpoweringly so and the carved decoration is particularly nice having been very well executed by the original maker.
Overall it remains in pretty good condition and the gilding has aged wonderfully, taking on an attractive gold lustre over time with some darker areas and some rubbed areas all combining to create lovely contrasts. One would imagine that the mirror has hung in one place for a large part of its life but there has been odd pieces of damage and repairs over the years with some carving touched up and some excess carving perhaps broken and therefore removed. Now though it is all very much solid and stable.
There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes and rubbed areas, all of which are commensurate with age and add to the overall character of the piece without detracting from it aesthetically in the slightest. We also believe that the mirror plate itself is almost certainly original.
The original purpose of convex mirrors was to reflect and spread the light source into as many parts of a room as possible and this is turn can often make a room feel significantly bigger.
