The present suite of 16th century engravings depicting the four seasons follows after original designs by Lambert Lombard (1505-1566) that were published in 1568 by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp, Belgium.
Cock employed many notable engravers of his epoch including Cornelis Cort, Giorgio Ghisi, Adriaen Collaret, Johannes Wierix, et al. His workshop served many other artists of the period, producing in print-form numerous designs conceived Lambert Lombard (already noted), Frans Floris, Pieter Breughel the Elder, Maarten van Heemskerck, et al.
We might assume the copyist responsible for the present suite descended from the school of these artists, either capitalizing on the popularity of the work or seeking to refresh the designs for a subsequent generation.
All four engravings are printed on fine laid paper with wide margins, and are uniformly matted, ready to be framed.
