Extraordinary dining or desk table designed by Melchiorre Bega and manufactured by Vittorio Bega in Bologna, Italy in 1950. This table could perfectly fit in the post-modern era but was made in the 1950s. This shows that Bega was a visionair and it’s not a surprise he worked with the greatest visionair in design an architecture; Gio Ponti. The form of the legs were unique and unlike anything else at that time. Also the top makes this table stand out. It’s an ocean blue/green mirror glass top with a recess in the middle otherwise the top. Here you can see the structure through the mirrored glass. The table is made a of wooden structure with warm wooden veneer. The edges of the wooden structure have a rounded waterfall design. A really modern table for the year it was designed. A similar model can be seen in the archives of Bega. Bega often made unique pieces referring to a previous design and these pieces got more refined every time. The table is in good original condition, corners show surface craquelé in the veneer which is visible on the pictures, but the construction is still super strong and stable. The chairs on the pictures are not included but can be purchased here. Melchiorre Bega was a prominent figure of 20th century Italian architecture. Whereas the writing of histories has not made him a full-fledged protagonist, still throughout his five-decades-long career he had the occasion to cross and interpret the main movements and ideas of his times – from the 1930s rationalism to the 1950s international style and later on even brutalism, though peripherally – and to get in touch with first-tier intellectuals, such as Gio Ponti. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
