Extremely special and rare prototype of the 508 lounge chair by Geoffrey Harcourt manufactured by Artifort in the Netherlands in 1970. Where the 508 came out with its tulip base, this is a study model of the chair. The chair is In fully original and museum worthy, unused condition. The chair has its original deep red bouclé from the time. This version has the same seating as the 508 but fluidly forms into an upholstered base. It’s like a blooming flower. Each side has an open structure, like the feet are inverted. This immediately gives it its iconic presence. This is a one-of-a-kind design and an starting point of a classic. Provenance; a former Artifort upholsterer who won this chair at the yearly Artifort bingo. Only one of this specific model was ever made. Geoffrey David Harcourt studied at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1962 he designed his first series of small office chairs for Artifort. with his contribution, Artifort gains access to the international project design market. Harcourt initially mainly designs seating furniture for reception areas. His second design for Artifort, the series 042 from 1963, was an immediate international success. His philosophy is that the chair should focus on people and not the other way around. “First the person, then the chair.” Harcourt won many prizes and was awarded the title “Royal Designer for Industry” in 1978.
