what a fantastic, joyous, explosive painting, free as a bird but rigorous and thoughtful at the same time.
i saw this when it was pretty new, possibly at the bart wells institute’s inaugural bart wells gang exhibition in shoreditch in 2001. That’s a long time ago, so i may have the details wrong, but i definitely remember seeing and loving it somewhere around then, in company with a few more great paintings in the same vein. And now, here it is again - leaning against my wall.
there’s plenty to look at: a perspective grid framework that dissolves and reforms, lines that strike out, meander off, fade away, blur and ripple. You can imagine it as a painting being repainted, areas blotted out then showing through the new layers.
one of those findings that makes me wish for infinite wall space.
luke gottelier lives and works in london. He graduated from norwich school of art in 2000. Exhibitions include: the nutcracker, belmacz, london (2014-2015), mata hari solo, ancient & modern, london (2013), paintings and furniture, kate macgarry, london (2014), newspeak 2: british art now, saatchi gallery, london (2011-2012), songs of love and hate, ancient & modern, london (2008), john moores 22, the walker, liverpool (2002), near & elsewhere, photographers gallery, london (1999).
a slightly younger young british artist, he was director of the influential bart wells institute gallery/collective, active in and around shoreditch around the turn of the century. This piece has an attribution mark,
