The large-format panel shows the face of Christ against the background of a light cloth pulled up at the two upper corners. The motif dates back to the paintings of Correggio (1489-1534) and Gianfrancesco Barbieri, gan. the. Guercino (1591-1666 Bologna). In late medieval painting it was already treated pictorially in a way that went beyond the idea of a natural facial imprint, as the legend of Saint Veronica tells. Here, the naturalistic rendering of Jesus' face is further accentuated in the sense of realism. It is a life-size view of the head of Christ, with a crown of thorns, drops of blood and hanging hair. The type of image is to be understood as a devotional image. The version that has become known by Guercino is in vertical format. On the sides, the canvas leaves a dark background free, with a round painted in white with the writing “S.F.C./P.” bottom right.
