Embark on a compelling journey with this handwoven wool distressed antique Caucasian Shirvan kilim rug from the late 19th century, a piece that exudes the rugged beauty and nomadic charm of the Shirvan weaving tradition. This weathered tribal kilim, with its vibrant colors and intricate designs, tells the story of a people deeply connected to the land and to their heritage. The allover geometric design, composed of wide and narrow horizontal bands, is decorated with a variety of ambiguous motifs and tribal symbols that speak to the Shirvan people’s beliefs in protection, fertility, and good fortune.
At the heart of this kilim are the striking stepped hexagonal medallions, adorned with scorpion motifs, believed to provide protection, and Elibelinde (Hands on Hips) symbols, representing motherhood and fertility. These symbols are complemented by Bereket motifs, further reinforcing the theme of fertility. Cross motifs, scattered across the field, serve as a powerful defense against the evil eye, with the belief that the cross can divide and reduce its harmful influence. The Goz eye symbols, also woven into the design, are another layer of protection, thought to be the best defense against malevolent forces.
Beyond the central medallions, the field is ornamented with thin stripes embellished with bird motifs, symbols of good luck and hope. These delicate elements bring a sense of life and movement to the kilim, as if the birds are ready to take flight, carrying the blessings of fortune with them.
