One of the most important and influential designers in history, hans j. Wegner (1914-2007), is most often seen as a driving force of the danish mid-century modernist movement - an era that forever changed the way we look at furniture.
wegner was born in 1914 in tønder, denmark, the son of a shoemaker. From 1928 to 1932 he was an apprentice at the furniture manufacturer h.f. Stahlberg and made his first chair at the age of 15. He then studied under orla mølgaard-nielsen at the danish design academy from 1936 to 1938 before working as a designer in arne jacobsen and erik møller's renowned architectural firm. During this time, wegner also designed furniture for the town hall in åarhus and began working with the cabinet maker johannes hansen and michael laursen. In 1940 he designed a rocking chair for laursen, which was wegner's first chair for mass production. Wegner opened his own studio in gentofte in 1943.
wegner mastered the combination of modernism, craftsmanship and nordic functionality in combination with the surprising influence of chinese furniture design. Over the course of his career he designed more than 500 chairs. More than 100 of them went into production and many are considered icons of international furniture design; for example the peacock chair (1947); the wishbone chair (1949); the round chair (1949), which the american magazine interiors called “the most beautiful chair in the world” and which was used in the first ever televised duel between presidential candidates john f. Kennedy and richard nixon in 1961; the three-legged shell chair (1949), made for moma's historic low budget furniture competition; the papa bear chair (1950); the flag halyard chair (1959); the dolphin chair (1951) and the valet chair (1953); the ox chair (1960) and the wing chair (1960). His designs were simultaneously functional and elegant, for example his solid wooden chairs often featured curved and conical elements joined with woven rattan or leather. Wegner used traditional manufacturing techniques and mixed materials such as plywood, metal, upholstery and paper mesh.
although wegner gained fame with his chairs, he also designed unforgettable cabinets, desks, tables, beds and lighting. Throughout his career, the designer has worked with the most renowned manufacturers, such as ap stolen, carl hansen & søns, fredericia stolefabrik, getama, fritz hansen, erik jorgensen, louis poulsen, ry møbler, pp møbler and andreas tuck.
wegner's furniture is in the permanent exhibitions of the best museums worldwide. He is also the winner of many prestigious awards such as the grand prix of the triennale in milan in 1950, the lunnung prize in 1951, the eckersberg medal in 1955 and the 8th international design award in 1997.
wegner died in copenhagen in 2007 at the age of 92, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of design and craftsmanship for future generations. This piece has an attribution mark,
