This is an exquisite mid century Indian floral etched brass urn table lamp designed by Leonard R. Foss Studios, Oakland, California.
Designer: Leonard R. Foss Studios (LRF).
Place of Manufacture: Oakland, California.
Period: Mid Century, circa 1950s.
Description: The lamp classical form urn is decorated with an Indian style floral motif - a intricate and masterful hand-etched design adorns the fluted neck, central body and domed base. The original tapered barrel form linen shade with gilt ground is finished with a fine contrasting gilt ribbon at top and bottom, internal gilt reflector, rests upon a harp, and capped with a fine polished brass pineapple finial lock (added later). The light element is a switch operated on/off Leviton socket, with a 70 inch cord, easily retracts manually (push/pull) within base to a desired length. The piece is signed by the designer, atop the lamp shade spider fitting.
Measures:
Lamp - 7.5 D x 30.5 H inches.
Shade - 15 D x 13 H inches.
About the Designer: The founder was born in California on Dec. 22, 1888. Foss studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in 1904-05 while living in Alameda, California. He died there on March 20, 1970. The company he started back in the depression era, 1927-28, LRF, Inc. he founded with his wife Ruby Foss. In 1929, he introduced a very successful line of sheepskin lampshades to America. Ever since, they've been sharing the spotlight with a range of classic names in home furnishings, like Thomas Molesworth, Gustav Stickley, and Marcel Breuer. Indeed, the kind of timeless design and craftsmanship that comes out of LRF transcends generations of style. Marc Foss, third generation president, stated, "The key to this business is that we were never bought and sold. Businesses that change hands get watered down and tend to fail because the philosophy of the original owner has been forgotten. " less
